Sidebar & Navigation

Grouped and flat modes, entry nesting, drag-and-drop, expand/collapse, and keyboard navigation.

Overview

The sidebar is your main navigation hub. It lists all your entries and templates, with two display modes, drag-and-drop nesting, and keyboard navigation.

Display Modes

Toggle between Grouped and Flat mode using the switch in the sidebar header.

Grouped Mode

Entries are organized under template headers. Each template section is collapsible and shows its entries sorted by most recently updated. Drag template sections to reorder them.

Each template header has a ... menu (and a right-click context menu) with actions: Create a new entry, Open the template page, Edit template, Hide from sidebar, and Delete (non-system templates only).

A + button in the toolbar above the sections opens a template picker — choose which template to create a new entry from.

Within a group, drag entries to reorder them. In grouped mode, drag only reorders — it does not nest entries. To nest entries, use Nest under... (see below).

Flat Mode

All entries appear in a single tree, regardless of template. This mode supports full nesting — drag an entry onto another entry to make it a child. Nested entries can go up to 10 levels deep.

A + button in the toolbar opens the same template picker as grouped mode.

Nesting Entries

In flat mode, drag an entry onto another entry to nest it. Visual feedback helps you distinguish between nesting and reordering:

  • Ring highlight around the target entry means the dragged entry will become a child
  • Horizontal line between entries means the dragged entry will be reordered to that position

Nested entries show an indent and a disclosure triangle to expand/collapse their children.

Nest under...

In both sidebar modes, you can right-click any entry (or use the ... menu) and choose Nest under... to open a searchable picker. Type to filter entries by title, then select a parent entry. The entry becomes a child of the selected parent.

  • If the entry already has a parent, a Remove from parent option appears at the top of the list
  • The picker excludes the entry itself, its descendants (to prevent cycles), and entries that would exceed the maximum nesting depth
  • Use arrow keys to navigate the list, Enter to select, and Escape to close

Expand & Collapse

  • Click the disclosure triangle on any entry or template section to expand/collapse it
  • In flat mode, use the expand all / collapse all buttons in the toolbar above the entry list
  • Auto-expand ancestors: When you open a nested entry (e.g., from search or a direct link), all its parent entries automatically expand so it's visible in the sidebar

Entry Breadcrumbs

When viewing a nested entry, a breadcrumb trail appears in the header bar showing the full ancestry path from root to the current entry. Each breadcrumb shows the parent's icon and title — click any breadcrumb to navigate directly to that parent entry.

Template Folders

In the sidebar's template section, you can organize templates into collapsible folders:

  • Create a folder — click the folder icon in the template section toolbar
  • Add templates — drag a template onto a folder to move it inside
  • Quick group — drag one template onto another template to auto-create a folder containing both (the folder enters rename mode immediately)
  • Remove from folder — drag a template out of a folder, or right-click and select "Remove from folder"
  • Rename — double-click a folder name, or right-click and select "Rename"
  • Delete — right-click a folder and select "Remove folder" (templates inside become ungrouped)

Folders can be reordered by dragging. Each folder shows its template count and can be collapsed independently.

Drag Entry to Template

You can also drag any entry from the sidebar onto the template section to save it as a template. A "Drop to create template" overlay appears — releasing the entry opens the Save As Template dialog with the entry's title pre-filled.

Resizing the Sidebar

Drag the right edge of the sidebar to adjust its width. The handle appears as a subtle vertical line when you hover near the edge.

  • Drag the handle left or right to resize (200px–480px range)
  • Double-click the handle to reset to the default width (256px)
  • Keyboard: focus the handle with Tab, then use \u2190/\u2192 to adjust (hold Shift for larger steps)
  • Snap to collapse: drag below the minimum width to collapse the sidebar entirely
  • Your preferred width persists across page refreshes

On mobile, the sidebar uses a fixed-width drawer instead of the resize handle.

Collapsing the Sidebar

  • Click the collapse button in the sidebar header, or press Cmd+\
  • Collapsed view shows icon-only navigation (Home, Graph, Settings, Trash)
  • State persists across page refreshes

Multi-Select & Bulk Actions

You can select multiple entries in the sidebar and perform bulk operations on them.

Selecting entries

  • Right-click any entry and choose Multi-select, or click the ... menu and choose Multi-select
  • Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click entries to toggle individual selections
  • Hold Shift and click to select a range of entries
  • When entries are selected, checkboxes appear next to all entries

Bulk actions

A compact action bar appears at the bottom of the sidebar with buttons to:

  • Move entries to a different template
  • Tag entries (add or remove tags)
  • Archive entries
  • Delete entries (moves to trash)

Press Escape to clear the selection. Selection also clears automatically when you navigate to a different page or switch spaces.

Keyboard Navigation

The sidebar uses the ARIA tree pattern for keyboard navigation:

KeyAction
\u2191 / \u2193Move focus between entries
Shift+\u2191 / Shift+\u2193Extend selection while moving focus
SpaceToggle selection of focused entry
\u2190Collapse current node or move to parent
\u2192Expand current node or move to first child
HomeMove focus to first entry
EndMove focus to last visible entry
EnterOpen the focused entry
EscapeClear selection

Pinned & Recent Sections

  • Pinned section shows entries you've pinned for quick access (see Dashboard)
  • Recent section shows your most recently accessed entries, ordered by last visit (not just last edit)

Tags Section

A collapsible Tags section lists all tags in the current space. Each tag shows its entry count. Click a tag to see all entries with that tag.
